The Ultimate Guide to Setting and Sticking to Your New Year's Goals.

The Ultimate Guide to Setting and Sticking to Your New Year's Goals

As the calendar flips to a new year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the past and contemplating the future. It's that time when we set ambitious goals, eager to turn the page and embrace positive change. Yet, despite our best intentions, sticking to New Year's resolutions often proves more challenging than anticipated. But fear not! This year, let's break the cycle of abandoned goals and set ourselves up for success from the get-go.

1. Reflect on the Past Year:

Before diving into the future, take a moment to reflect on the past year. What worked well? What could have been better? Reflecting on your achievements and learning experiences will provide valuable insights that can shape your goals for the coming year.

2. SMART Goals Are Your BFFs:

You've probably heard of SMART goals, but have you applied them to your New Year's resolutions? Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals are more likely to be achieved. Instead of a vague resolution like "exercise more," try "commit to 30 minutes of brisk walking every day."

3. Prioritize and Limit:

While it's tempting to create an extensive list of resolutions, it's crucial to prioritize and limit your focus. Identify the most impactful goals that align with your values and long-term vision. This will prevent overwhelm and increase your chances of success.

4. Break It Down:

Large goals can be intimidating, so break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. Celebrate small victories along the way, as these milestones will keep you motivated and on track.

For example, using the goal above: Commit to 30 minutes of brisk walking every day.

If you haven’t been exercising AT ALL, it can be difficult from going to not doing any physical activity whatsoever to incorporating 30 minutes DAILY.

If you wanted to break this goal down, try this:

  • Commit to 10 minutes of brisk walking 3x a week. (you can even break this down further with the amount of time spent doing the activity or number of times during a week).

Reminder - if you haven’t been engaging in a habit, something is better than nothing!! - this will also reduce disappointment, self-criticism & limit any resistance your mind & body may have towards change - all while gaining confidence by keeping the commitments you make to yourself.

5. Accountability Partners:

Share your goals with a friend or family member who can hold you accountable. Having a support system makes the journey more enjoyable and provides an extra layer of motivation.

6. Adjust and Adapt:

Life is unpredictable, and circumstances may change. Be open to adjusting your goals if needed. Flexibility doesn't equate to failure; it's a sign of resilience and adaptability.

7. Create a Visual Reminder:

Craft a visual representation of your goals—a vision board, a digital wallpaper, or daily affirmations. Having a tangible reminder of your aspirations can keep you focused and inspired. I personally love creating a digital wallpaper for by phone background!

8. Mindset Matters:

Approach your goals with a positive and growth-oriented mindset. Embrace challenges as opportunities to learn and grow rather than obstacles. A positive attitude can make all the difference.

9. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection:

No one is perfect, and setbacks are a natural part of any journey. Instead of dwelling on perfection, celebrate the progress you've made. Acknowledge the effort you've put in, and don't be too hard on yourself.

10. Reflect and Readjust:

Regularly review your goals and assess your progress. If something isn't working, don't hesitate to readjust. The key is to stay engaged and committed to your aspirations.

Embarking on a new year is a thrilling opportunity for personal growth and positive change. By approaching your goals with intention, realism, and adaptability, you can set the stage for a successful and fulfilling year ahead.

Here's to crushing it in 2024!
